As a result of glycolysis, one molecule of glucose is broken down to two molecules of pyruvate. During glycolysis 4 molecules of ATP are produced but 2 molecules of ATP are consumed in the activation of glucose molecule. Therefore, there is a net gain of 2 molecules of ATP.
